“Art is the only way to run away without leaving home”- Twyla Tharp Britt Gusterman has spent all of her life creating. The daughter of two Swedish immigrants, Britt came to America as a toddler and grew up in a family of artists. Her parents, Astrid and Stig, were silversmiths who made a their way in America by selling their creations. Britt was an unknowing apprentice at a very young age, and with her sister, Kerstin, have continued the tradition with a their own jewelry store, Gusterman Silversmith’s. It is Britt’s unique pieces, that over the years, have made the shop a well-known Santa Fe establishment. While the jewelry pays the bills, it is painting where Britt’s passion lies. With Barbara Streisand blaring in the background, Britt moves about her studio with pleasure and joy and a paintbrush in tow. Britt’s enjoyment is seen in the whimsical style and bold color in her paintings. The flowers look alive, the landscapes unreal and the people are more naive versions of ourselves. Britt’s cleverness and humor also comes through in the titles and the visions. She is never afraid to be herself, in life and in art. Britt is a published artisan of both trades, and while continuing to make jewelry, she is pursuing her passion and sharing it with the world.
